Michael Wormuth      1744 - 1778

Michael Wormuth was the son of Peter Wormuth who lived across the Mohawk River opposite Fort Plain. Michael was a Lieutenant during the Revolutionary War. He was killed by Joseph Brant’s Indians in 1778 while carrying dispatches between Fort Plain and Fort Alden in Cherry Valley. His father’s home was the site where George Washington stayed while inspecting the troops at Fort Plain.  New research has found that he is actually buried on the land that was owned by his family North of the Mohawk River near the South end of Abeel island and the village of Nelliston. The monument in the Fort Plain Cemetery only memorializes him.
